Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with one of the basic forms of direct democracy in the system of local government in Poland, which is the citizen’s legislative initiative. It touches upon the essence and role of the initiative, its objective and subjective scope, as well as procedural requirements to be met by both the initiators and the municipal decision-making body in connection with launching an initiative. The aim of the article is to show that the citizen’s legislative initiative, despite some shortcomings of its legal regulation, constitutes a strong mechanism of social participation, a valuable tool of civic education, an instrument of integration of the local community and an instrument of influence on councillors who do not always fulfil their election promises. The study uses a dogmatic method, consisting in the analysis of legal regulations, views of the legal doctrine and court rulings.
