Summary/Abstract: The focus of this paper is identity, which is most clearly manifested through the preservation and promotion of one’s mother tongue. For this reason, the process of implementing a model of complete education in the Bosnian language in Sandžak was taken as a case study. Bosniaks in Serbia began studying their mother tongue as an elective subject, Bosnian Language with Elements of National Culture, in primary school starting in the second semester of the 2004/2005 school year. Eight years later, in the autumn of 2012, a petition signed by over 11,000 citizens, parents of pupils, requested full instruction in the Bosnian language, in accordance with constitutionally and legally guaranteed rights. Preparatory classes were held in 12 educational institutions: for preschool children, first and fifth grades of primary school, and first grade of secondary school. These classes began on February 21, 2013, International Mother Language Day, later established as the Day of Bosnian Language Education in Sandžak. Regular classes began on September 2 of the same year in Novi Pazar, Tutin, Sjenica, and Prijepolje. By the 2016/17 school year, the implementation process was completed, establishing this model of instruction alongside classes in Serbian, Albanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Romanian, Rusyn, Croatian, Slovak, and other languages.
