Summary/Abstract: In the context of considerations about the role of Latin in today’s culture, the author of the article tries to explain who has used the Latin language throughout history: what groups of people, for what purposes, when and in what circumstances. It also answers questions about whether Latin is a living or dead language, considering the definition of these linguistic categories as such. Finally, it refers to the volume of texts in Latin that are at our disposal today and what proportion of these texts are translated and studied.
