Summary/Abstract: In the North of Mehedinți County, in the villages of the area called Plaiul Cloșani, there is a celebration that has at its center not a saint, but an epidemic, that of the plague. Although there has been very little research on this celebration, called Ciumarcă or Plague Friday, it is still celebrated in many communities. Ciumarca has an uncertain origin. The testimonies of the locals led us to the conclusion that its initiator can be none other than St. Pious Nicodemus from Tismana, the one who, at the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th, deeply marked the religious life in this area, being considered the reorganizer of monasticism in the Oltenia Region.
