Summary/Abstract: The activities of the group of authors associated with the Washington-based journal Arkánum (1981–1996) was generally described as a major achievement of Hungarian neo-avant-garde literature. However, the group primarily referred to its own work as “avant-garde” without the “neo-” prefix, and the group’s interest in Surrealism, is also more accurately described as Surrealism rather than Neo-Surrealism. The author, summarizing and expanding upon the findings of his previous publications on this topic – discusses primarily Sándor András’s theoretical article published in the first issue of Arkánum, On the Avant-Garde, within a transnational framework, and taking into account the András’s subsequent reflections, written in 2020.
