Early signs of autism – a literature review

Summary/Abstract: ASD is a developmental disorder characterised by qualitative abnormalities in mutual social interactions, communication, and limited, repetitive interests and behaviours. Today in Poland, knowledge about the early symptoms of ASD is lacking, therefore the average age of diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders is around 3 years of age. Late diagnosis misses the chance to undertake actions in the field of early intervention. This article is an attempt to synthetically describe the most common symptoms of ASD in the first years of a child’s life. Due to the diversity of the initial signals appearing at a child’s given age, the focus was first on those that are observed from birth to 12 months of age, and then those appearing from the first to the third year of life. The entirety is summarised and systematised in two tables with the descriptions of symptoms.
