Summary/Abstract: The development of legal anthropology can be understood as a dynamic process closely connected to the intellectual and political transformations of modernity. From its emergence in the nineteenth century, through a period of narrowing of its field of study in the second half of the twentieth century, to its revitalization after the Cold War, the discipline highlights both the continuity of concerns regarding the relationship between law and society and the constant adaptation of anthropological methodologies. Its origins lie in the works of scholars such as Henry Maine and Lewis Morgan, who used law as a tool for analyzing social development, political change, and historical evolution. For them, law was not limited to an institutional dimension but represented a fundamental principle of social organization, shaping kinship structures, economic distribution, political authority, and mechanisms of conflict resolution, within an integrative vision of societal transformations.
