Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the theoretical framework of communication within Grice’s semantic-pragmatic intentional theory of meaning, which encompasses the distinction between natural and non-natural meaning, as well as between conventional and conversational implicatures grounded in the principle of cooperativeness, or the cooperative principle. The theoretical framework is applied to the analysis of dialogues from selected dramatic texts. The analysis shows that dialogue in drama represents a specific mode of language use in which the maxims of the cooperative principle may be either observed or violated, thereby enabling the derivation or inference of implied meanings within the framework of double-coded communication characteristic of dramatic discourse. Through the presentation of contextualized and decontextualized meaning, the study proceeds from the hypothesis that it is not easy to identify and precisely determine the dichotomy between generalized and particularized conversational implicatures in dramatic texts, since different modes of implicature derivation depend on the degree of contextual dependence or independence.
