International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in education – opportunities and challenges

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in an educational context. The discussion of the structure of the classification and the procedures for its application allows the key difficulties and challenges faced by the scientific community and practitioners in the process of implementing the ICF to be formulated. The author points out, among others: the limits of defining disability and the implications of this for financing support systems, the rules of coding and generating qualifiers, including the compliance of the ICF nomenclature with the terminology of scientific disciplines, developing the knowledge and awareness of potential ICF users. The article also encourages experts to undertake joint work to competently adapt the ICF for the Polish education system.
