Summary/Abstract: Predictions of American decline are gaining popularity once more. This line of thought imposes a certain manner of perception of the role the United States plays in the world. Platitudinous as it may sound, a confident, assertive U.S. will be a different player internationally than an U.S. harboring doubts about its dominant position. Only if the country becomes aware of the dwindling of its position will it be able to use remedies, by either attempting to restore the fundamentals of its power or, if such efforts were deemed futile, minimizing the adverse consequences of changes in the global alignment of forces. But overlooking or dismissing the portends of decline may prove as dangerous as their exaggeration due to erroneous premises.
