Summary/Abstract: As iconic signs evolve into symbols, the distance between their meaning and the signified object increases, causing the folkloric register to give way to the cultured register. Comprehending the cultured register and its accurate interpretation is closely linked to knowledge of the community or social groups that generated it. Signs and gestures in popular culture are built upon an understanding of the natural and spiritual worlds and the ways they interact to achieve perfection in the material realm. Romanian carols, particularly those performed between Christmas Eve and New Year, exemplify this dynamic; they employ a diverse array of signs and symbols, ranging from the most accessible elements - such as fruits, sticks, or simple gestures - to the highly complex.
