Her enthralling melodies, her expressive alto voice, her cooperation with Paul Killington for perfect harmony and guitar playing, all these make her songs haunting gems of blues.Maria Daines is a prolific song writer, the author of the lyrics and the melodies of the lots of dozens of songs she has performed and recorded in her three decades’ career. She has also been the voice that has exclusively performed the respective pieces of music. This article analyses some of her lyrics as texts on religion, nature and love. There are in each of them haunting pieces of music rendering dramatic texts, which makes Maria Daines not only a singer and a composer, but also a poet of the first rank.
