Summary/Abstract: Flaubert’s Correspondence illustrates the distinctive features of research during the writing process of Salammbô, as well as the stages the text must go through to reach its final form, from the stage of revery and expansion, to the phase of condensation and revision. It is a genuine archaeological endeavour that helps the author put aside the modern context of his previous novel and free himself from the constraints he had imposed on himself while writing Madame Bovary.
