Summary/Abstract: The roundtable discussion organized within the framework of the Carpathian Basin ethnographic conference “Living Collections – The Role of Ethnographic, Local History Collections and Folk Heritage Houses in Our Communities” examined the current situation, operational experiences, and future prospects of Hungarian folk heritage houses, ethnographic collections, and local history museums across various regions of the Carpathian Basin. Drawing on examples from Hungary, Vojvodina, and Croatia, the participants analyzed the social and community backgrounds of collection establishment, as well as contemporary issues related to maintenance, professional supervision, museum inventory management, and heritage preservation. The discussion highlighted that most folk heritage houses were founded as grassroots community initiatives, and that their successful operation largely depends on local commitment and professional museological support. Particular attention was devoted to the educational, identity-preserving, and communitybuilding functions of folk heritage houses, as well as to the recognition that the long-term sustainability of collections requires systematic documentation and the preservation of knowledge associated with museum objects. The participants agreed that folk heritage houses and lifestyle museums play a crucial role in safeguarding the cultural heritage of Hungarian communities throughout the Carpathian Basin. Consequently, strengthening professional cooperation and institutional networks, as well as considering the establishment of an independent association of folk heritage houses in Vojvodina, were identified as important future objectives.
