Summary/Abstract: This study explores a methodological approach applicable both in open-air ethnographic museums and local heritage houses, focusing on the representation of situations built around interiors preserved in situ within buildings of vernacular architectural value. Such representations may evoke calendar customs, rites of passage, work processes, everyday activities, as well as social or historical traumas and events. The professional experience of the Hungarian Open Air Museum (Szentendre Skanzen), which has accumulated extensive expertise in this field, provides the methodological background for the discussion. In heritage-house settings, this approach creates a complex connection between the dimensions of built, material, and intangible cultural heritage, resulting in a museum representation that, as an alternative interior arrangement, offers visitors an attractive diversity of interpretation within the collection. The museum presentation of intangible cultural heritage broadens the possibilities for communicating local values to communities. Important interpretive frameworks include questions of museum representation in heritage houses, the necessity of interpretation for understanding complex layers of meaning, practices of remembrance, efforts to create a sense of living heritage, the development of dynamic domestic interiors, and progressive methods of documenting, collecting, and presenting objects associated with customs. This is particularly significant because research on customs does not always record in full detail the material objects involved in their enactment. Consequently, research conducted to supplement heritage-house interiors in this respect can contribute to strengthening local identity while also providing valuable data for further scholarly investigations.
