Summary/Abstract: Within the extensive compositional oeuvre of Johannes Brahms (1833–1897), the motif of rain serves as a significant source of thematic inspiration for several of his works. The solo songs Regenlied WoO 23 and Regenlied Op. 59 No. 3 were composed in different phases of Brahms’s creativity and result from the musical setting of a poem with the same title by Klaus Groth (1819–1899). The analytical foundation of this paper is based on a formal and comparative analysis of these compositions, with the aim of identifying the similarities and differences between them, which are primarily grounded in the relationship between text and music. Through a formal analysis, the paper raises the question of the evocative aspects present in Brahms’s rain-themed compositions and formulates assumptions regarding the interrelationship of these syncretic works, encompassing a metatextual dialogue between the elements of poetry and music.
