Summary/Abstract: This article reassesses the strategic objectives and operational realities of the 1521 campaign through an analysis of unpublished archival documents. The article argues that while the capture of Belgrade was a crucial Ottoman victory, it functioned primarily as a sideline success within a much broader strategic agenda intended to destabilize the Hungarian central authority. Key operational shortcomings included the mismanagement of logistics, ineffective fleet coordination, and the failure to mobilize the Anatolian army. It illustrates the 1521 campaign as a case of early Süleyman-era Ottoman military flexibility that was shaped as much by circumstance as by planning.
