Summary/Abstract: Based on history textbooks, works, and studies published in the USSR and, more recently, in the Russian Federation, the paper presents the means of repression used by the Soviet regime against all layers of the population. Special attention is given to the Great Terror from 1937-1938 and the post-WWII period, up until the death of Joseph V. Stalin in March, 1953. It also highlights the measures taken to rehabilitate the victims of repression after the 20th Congress of the CPSU (February 1956), as well as during the policy of openness promoted by the last Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev.
