Summary/Abstract: The article begins with Karol Wojtyła’s diagnosis of the threats to personhood posed by totalitarian ideologies and certain philosophical schools of the 20th century. Wojtyła argued that these threats were more metaphysical than ethical in nature. The article then analyzes contemporary trends such as genderism, environmentalism, and transhumanism, which pose new threats to personhood. These new projects can be characterized as ethical and seem to require a change in the metaphysical image of the person. In this way, Wojtyła’s diagnosis is reinforced and slightly modified in contemporary philosophy and culture. In order to defend the person, Karol Wojtyła’s appeal to rethink and recapitulate the concept of the person becomes even more urgent and necessary.
