The political dimensions of contemporary discourse among representatives of religious minority elites in Poland

Summary/Abstract: This article explores the political dimensions of religious identity among minority Christian religious denominations in Poland, investigating the intersection of religious, ethnic, and national identification. This study analyses five major minority denominations, including the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church, Greek CatholicChurch, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession and the Pentecostal Church in Poland. The research is based on demographic data and critical discourse analysis of expert interviews to highlight significant discrepancies in official statistics. The findings of this study indicate a wide spectrum of political stances, ranging from the political neutrality of Jehovah’s Witnesses to the active human rights advocacy of the Lutheran community. This study corroborates the hypothesis that Orthodox refugees from Ukraine demonstrate a marked preference for the Greek Catholic Church as a “mainstay of Ukrainian identity” – which is attributed to the existence of linguistic barriers and historical traumas that characterise the internal diversity of the Polish Orthodox community.
