Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the 1920s the formation of communist Macedonianism was beginning to take shape, which grew into a political doctrine with the decision of 11th January 1934, taken by the Communist International on the existence of a distinct so-called ‘Macedonian nation’ and ‘Macedonian language’. The Comintern and its sections – namely the communist parties of Bulgaria /BCP/, Yugoslavia /YCP/ and Greece /KKE/ were subordinate to the Kremlin and served as one of the channels for advancing Soviet geopolitical interests for influence and control over the Balkans. The main purpose of the Macedonianist propaganda was to set in motion a large-scale process of Macedonianization among the Bulgarian population in Macedonia and to resolve the Macedonian question according to the Soviet state-political model within the borders of Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Greece. The implementation of such an ambitious programme proved to be overwhelming for the weak Balkan communist parties, which didn’t have a numerous membership. The Bulgarians in Macedonia did not transform themselves into ‘Macedonians’ and did not abandon the pan-Bulgarian ideal of national unification. The marginal results achieved in 1934 – 1944 by BCP and YCP did not change the overall negative balance. The political period of Macedonianism finished with the end of the Second World War, when it was transformed into a state-backed doctrine of the totalitarian communist regimes both in Bulgaria and Yugoslavia.
