Summary/Abstract: Publishing houses occupy a distinctive position within the literary field, functioning as connective nodes between two systemic domains: culture and economy. In the transposition of media characteristic of these systems, publishers assume a regulatory function whereby the values rooted in cultural trust are transferred into the sphere of monetary exchange, the operative medium of the economic system. Book publishers mediate this selective transfer through a process of double encoding. The printed book thus emerges as a hybrid object: on the one hand, endowed with cultural value (literary, scholarly, etc.), and on the other, inscribed with a specific economic value. This dynamic becomes particularly visible at the level of paratexts, which must reconcile the expectations of both subsystems. In this article, I demonstrate this phenomenon through three case studies illustrating the introduction of Polish literature to the publishing market of the Federal Republic of Germany.
