Footnotes as a Patchwork Biography?: Examples From the Correspondence Between Maria Dąbrowska and Anna Kowalska

Summary/Abstract: This article draws on selected footnotes to the correspondence between Maria Dąbrowska and Anna Kowalska, comprising over 2,300 letters exchanged between 1940 and 1965, of which only a small fraction has been made available to readers (letters from 1940–1945 were published in 2024; those from 1946, in 2025 (vols. 1–2), subsequent volumes are in preparation for publication in 2026–2027). The text seeks to address whether footnotes – depending on their content – may constitute a form of alternative biography, subject to various constraints imposed by the duration of the correspondence, its narrative structure, and the personal, social, and political matters discussed in the letters, as well as the correspondents’ references to their own readings and recollections. This is a biography à rebours, presenting life and creative activity in an order other than the straightforward chronological sequence. Conceived at the intersection of the letters’ content and the annotations accompanying them, such a biography resembles a patchwork fabric composed of a multitude of diverse, seemingly incongruous elements that ultimately coalesce into a coherent and meaningful biographical whole, though qualitatively distinct from a linear biography.
