Summary/Abstract: This article offers a discourse-based interpretation of selected paratextual materials: the title page of the 1551 printed edition of the Gospel according to Matthew; the marginal commentaries, both the printed ones – authored by the translator Stanisław Murzynowski and the publisher Jan Seklucjan – and the predominantly polemical manuscript annotations responding to them and to the entire text, written chiefly by Jan Sandecki Malecki; as well as the expanded version of these same commentaries, arranged in the manuscript entitled 'Haereses et errores in Commentario Joannis Secluciani in Mattaeum per Joannem Maletium' (1551), compiled by Hieronim Malecki. These paratextual data are examined as discursive markers of the formation of a cognitive community drawing on the humanist discourse of the period. The dispute between Jan Sandecki‑Malecki, and Jan Seklucjan and Stanisław Murzynowski reveals two contrasting attitudes toward the vernacularisation of humanist discourse within the confessional community of Königsberg: a moderate and a radical one. The analysis focuses on selected aspects of how the paratext signals methods of acquiring and validating knowledge, including evidentiality. Attention is also given to key lexical items functioning as discursive markers which, together with the paratextual indicators, constitute a conceptual lexicon of the community understood as a distinct thought collective. The methodological framework draws directly on linguistic scholarship in pragmatic linguistics, particularly discourse studies and pragmatic semantics, typically employed in discourse analysis.
