Summary/Abstract: Aristotle's work Politics deals with issues of communal life in a community that has overcome the tribal organization and achieved statehood. Based on experience, observations, and information of the state structures that existed in his time and before, Aristotle concludes that the education of young people is crucial to the well-being of the state and that, accordingly, it must be established, implemented, and regulated by the state. He argued that music is an essential and exceptional part of children's education – it is necessary and indispensable for the development of free and dignified citizens. The issues Aristotle raised regarding music in general education are still relevant today.
