Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Chinese dance creation, shaped by the pressures of globalization, faces the challenge of integrating inherited cultural traditions with a modern artistic language. The dance work “Thousand-Hand Guanyin” (choreography by Zhang Jigang) exemplifies a successful “creative transformation” of a religious image into a contemporary stage form. This article examines the piece as a structured choreographic construct in which visual order, spatial organization, and collective corporeality generate an aesthetic of formal precision and spiritual elevation. The analysis focuses on the cultural metaphors, the philosophy of the body, and the choreographic architecture through which the work converts traditional iconography into a dynamic dance narrative. The study offers a structuralist reading of “Thousand-Hand Guanyin,” revealing the mechanisms by which its meticulously coordinated movement produces an autonomous artistic logic within contemporary Chinese choreography.
