Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the architecture of residential buildings in Southern China. In terms of climate, topography, natural resources, and other factors, the region is far more diverse than the North. The article briefly examines the transformation of the northern Shuyuan houses into narrower, cube-like houses with a sky well rather than a court, a form that spread throughout Southern China. It then concentrates on the water towns in the lower reaches of the Yangzi River and, lastly, on the fortress-like houses of the Hakka people in Fujian, Guangdong, and Jiangxi provinces.
