Summary/Abstract: As a traditional form of easel painting, printmaking offers a new source of inspiration for environmental design. Taking traditional Chinese prints and European copperplate engravings as research objects, this study explores the differences between the two in style, theme, artistic characteristics, and their impact on environmental design. Traditional Chinese printmaking is mainly woodcut, emphasizing composition, symbolic metaphor, and a freehand style. The Chinese aesthetic logic of combining reality and illusion has influenced the spatial layout of Chinese classical gardens and the interior and exterior decorations of modern buildings. European copperplate engravings focus more on rational perspective, objective, realistic expression, and the contrast between light and shadow, which align with the concepts of “formal beauty”, “order beauty” and “symmetrical beauty” advocated by Western classical architecture. Eastern and Western printmaking art intervenes in environmental design through material reconstruction, symbol extraction, and spatial layout. This provides theoretical support and practical inspiration for applying traditional art to contemporary design, and also offers new perspectives on interdisciplinary design innovation.
