Summary/Abstract: Wang Lina’s films A First Farewell and Village Music present a distinctive authorial view of Uyghur life in Xinjiang, moving beyond state-framed or exoticizing representations. The article explores how she fuses fiction, observational documentary, ethnographic detail, and poetic cinema into a subtle visual anthropology. Centering children’s perspectives, musical practices, and village rituals, Wang shapes an “inside” gaze marked by empathy and cultural continuity rather than political didacticism. Through an analysis of her monochrome aesthetics, sound, and narrative form, the article argues that her cinema creates a locally grounded yet universally resonant language of belonging and memory, opening new scholarly avenues for understudied multiethnic spaces in Chinese film.
