Czech Journalists: More Experience, a High Level of Autonomy, but Problematic Working And Economic Conditions and Inequality between Centre and Regions

Summary/Abstract: This article presents the data from the research on Czech journalists, conducted as part of the international comparative project, the Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS), in 2022–2023. The questionnaire survey was completed by 331 respondents who conform to the definition of a professional journalist by WJS, thereby earning 50% or more of their income and/or devoting 50% or more of their working time to journalism. The journalists were from all regions of the Czech Republic and across all media types. Their regional diversity was used to compare specific indicators related to media reach. The findings suggest that journalists remain in the field much longer than before, while facing unfavourable economic conditions and unpleasant or even hostile behaviour from the audience, yet still maintaining a high level of professional autonomy. They also shift their role perception beyond basic reporting, which they still consider crucial, to the role of more active actors in the public sphere. However, gender inequality persists and differences in perceptions of the owners’ influence on journalists’ work and poor economic security confirm the worsening position of regional and, especially, local media.
