Tradition and the Avant-Garde in Interwar Buziaș: The Hungarian Reading Circle

Summary/Abstract: The Hungarian Reading Circle in Buziaș functioned during the interwar period as an interethnic, bourgeois cultural institution. A core group of young people from local families active in administration, industry, and commerce coalesced around an elite with prewar roots whose origins dated back to the prewar period. Unlike the period from 1903 to 1918, when, immediately after its founding, the cultural society was distinguished by a traditional agenda, in “New Romania” the sociopolitical context favored a shift toward social life, theater, melodrama, European literature, and multilingual experiments, driven in part by a social mission that the Society had embraced during those years. At the same time, female figures took center stage in the arts, in line with a broader phenomenon of the new world of moral emancipation. The economic crisis, generational change, and the revival of German national consciousness in Banat were the main factors contributing to the decline of the Hungarian Reading Circle in Buziaș during the second decade of the interwar period.
