BENJAMIN BRITTEN IN THE CONTEXT OF THE REAFFIRMATION OF BRITISH CLASSICAL MUSIC ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE – 50 YEARS SINCE THE COMPOSER’S DEATH

Summary/Abstract: The year 2026 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten (1913–1976), one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century music and a composer who played a decisive role in the reaffirmation of British classical music on the international stage. This study explores his work as a composer, conductor, pianist, pedagogue, and cultural manager, highlighting his contributions to the revival of English opera, the development of music education, and the promotion of classical music to wider audiences. The study explores the way in which Britten combined tradition and modernity, drawing on the legacy of Henry Purcell while developing a distinctive compositional language characterized by clarity, expressiveness, and dramatic depth. It also takes on his commitment to music education, reflected in works such as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, his arrangements of traditional folk songs, and his initiatives aimed at cultivating young people’s artistic appreciation. The article also emphasizes the importance of the founding of the English Opera Group and the Aldeburgh Festival, projects through which Britten supported British musical creativity and expanded public access to opera. By combining artistic excellence with social responsibility and a strong educational vocation, Benjamin Britten reshaped Britain’s musical identity, and his legacy continues to influence the international repertoire, music education, and contemporary cultural life.
