Summary/Abstract: There is no doubt that Pekić’s dramatic work has remained overshadowed by his achievements as a novelist and storyteller. Directors and dramaturges very often shortened Pekić’s complex sentences in order to make the plays more accessible to the audience. One of the key questions to consider is certainly the definition of a specific genre within Borislav Pekić’s dramatic opus. Pekić himself refers to his plays as works created on the margins of his literary output. However, the fact remains that around thirty of his plays have been published, and that he, as a playwright, has been present on the stages of Belgrade and other Serbian theatres from the earliest performances, namely since 1971, up to the present day. The paper devotes most of its attention to the following works: How to Entertain Mr. Martin, On the Mad White Stone, The Categorical Demand, The Awakening of the Vampire. In these works, the play with plot and intrigue is combined with the play on the characters’ identities, where masks appear as an indicator of belonging to a world of self-deception.
