From Lenin to Tolstoy. Literary and Dramatic broadcasting on Czechoslovak Radio during the Normalisation Period

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the literary and dramatic output of Czechoslovak Radio during the period of Normalisation and, through the example of three radio productions differing in quality, genesis, dramaturgical approach, and directorial concept, to demonstrate the distinctive characteristics of radio drama in this era. The study traces the transformations of dramaturgy from the 1960s through the period of Normalisation, differentiating between a broad spectrum of artistic outcomes, ranging from overtly propagandistic and opportunistic productions (Lenin), through relatively routine and unremarkable adaptations of classical literature (The Precipice), to the most artistically accomplished productions of the period (War and Peace). Methodologically, the analytical section focuses on two fundamental aspects of radio production: the textual perspective (dramaturgy and adaptation) and the production perspective (direction). Particular attention is also paid to the evolution of stereophonic technology, which constituted an important precondition for the development of adaptation dramaturgy during the Normalisation era.
