Iranian intelligentsia and Islamic revolution of 1978—1979

Summary/Abstract: The article gives the review of the history of Iranian intelligentsia; be-ginning from the middle of the 19th century much attention is paid to its par-ticipation in the national-democratic movement. The attitude of Iranian intel-ligentsia of 1960—1970 to the important problems of public life of Iran, the understanding of its place in the history of Iran, the importance of Islam and the clergy in the life of the country are shown.The thoughts of the leading representatives of the religious pre-revolutionary intelligentsia of Iran: Jalal Alle Ahmad, Mehdi Bazargan, Ali Shariati, Abolhasan Banisadr are charac-terized. The reasons of the contradictory attitude of intelligentsia to Islamic revolution and ambiguous comprehension of intelligentsia in Islamic republic of Iran are explained
