Summary/Abstract: The article examines the potential of artistic and research interventions in reclaiming marginalised film biographies, using the exhibition project Wyśniona historia kina na Podlasiu [The Dreamed History of Cinema in Podlasie] as a case study. The author states that nationally oriented traditional historiography tends to systematically forget creators from the periphery and diasporas, rendering itself incomplete. Methodologically, the article is grounded in art-based research and Saidiya Hartman’s concept of critical fabulation. This perspective allows for grounded speculation and the creation of an “as-if” archive, enabling the filling of gaps where official sources remain silent or pathologize the experiences of marginalised groups. Drawing on the theories of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, and Jan Assmann, the author presents the archive as a field of negotiation between power and memory. He advocates for the use of artistic tools as legitimate cognitive methods for building counter-archives and filling gaps in cultural heritage.
