Summary/Abstract: This study concerns the rules of law according to which 16th-century Italian jurists settled disputes concerning matrimonial property relations. The analysis will be conducted using the example of legal issues that arose in connection with the estate of Taddei Malaspina, the youngest daughter of Antonio Alberico II Malaspina, Marquis of Massa, and Lucrezia d’Este. On 21 June 1524, she married Count Giovanni Battista Boiardo di Scandiano. The matter of interpreting the dowry agreement and settling this estate was consulted with the renowned lawyer Philippus Decius, and traces of these consultations remain in the published collection of his legal advice. The legal arguments used by the jurist to support a given solution will be analyzed. References to specific passages (lex) of the Corpus iuris civilis will be systematized. The goal is to attempt to answer the question of the law according to which specific issues should be resolved.
