Summary/Abstract: “Ius” derived from “Iustitia”. “Lex”, derived from “ligare”, was synonymous with the connection between magistrate and the deciding people. Both corresponded to a political organization of the Civitas centered on the direct participation of the cives. “Law” (diritto in italiano) derives from “dirigere” and originated in the Middle Ages to express the idea of direction from the top. Today, faced with the crisis of law, careful reflection and innovation are required: we need a utopia that will take us into the future. Tomorrow, we must restore the central role of the people in the most important laws and decisions. We must revive the participation of the people, as it existed in Rome, moving from representative democracy to “Continuous Democracy”.
