Summary/Abstract: The creation of the Roman law website IUS ROMANUM at the Faculty of Law and the journal of the same name in 2015 set two objectives. It focuses on the development of Roman law studies in Bulgaria and cooperation and the creation of a scientific Roman law community in the Balkans within the framework of the Balkan Association for Roman Law and Roman Legal Tradition “Societas pro iure romano”. However, its main objective is to create a broad forum for knowledge about Ancient Rome and its legal culture, to support the teaching of Roman law in Bulgaria and the Balkans, and to enable students to benefit from the achievements of contemporary Roman law studies, both in Bulgarian translation and in the original. The title of this article is actually the title of the first title of the first book of Justinian‘s Institutes and Digests. The article discusses the development of some ideas and positions on Roman law, presented to first-year students as an introduction to the relevant lecture course. Its purpose is to provide a brief summary of the main research on the subject, which is too extensive in its individual parts and difficult to present in a synthesized form. At the same time, understanding the concepts of ius, aequitas, iustitia, and ars boni et aequi as presented by the Roman iurisprudentes in the Digests is fundamental to the further teaching of the discipline in both private and public law.
