CULTURAL EMBLEM GDR IN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE: CLOTHING INSCRIPTIONS IN GERMAN AS CARRIERS OF CULTURAL MEMORY

Summary/Abstract: The present article examines Clothing inscriptions in German as a mediator of cultural memory, situating the topic at the intersection of language, culture, and fashion. The analysis focuses on T shirt prints related to German Democratic Republic (GDR). The present study deals with the linguistic, symbolic and humorous aspects of the text. The empirical analysis of selected examples employs a methodology that integrates linguistic and intertextual approaches. Utilising a range of clothing inscriptions, the study demonstrates how the cultural emblem GDR is staged linguistically and visually to express identity and memory. The topic under discussion opens up a wide range of didactic possibilities for teachers of Language and culture.
