Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the formation of adjectives derived from toponyms and with the specific anthroponymic meanings and functions of the Slovak and Polish adjectival suffix -ský/-ski and its variants in the formation of Slovak and Polish surnames. Based on these findings, the emergence and motivation behind the surname Ševčický – no longer found in Slovakia today – are interpreted. This Polish surname, which has been adapted into Slovak, could have formed from the historical name of the Polish settlement Schewczycze, which in the past belonged to the village of Skorkowicze. Considering that the Polish suffix -ski and its variants acquired a structural function in the formation of surnames, the Polish surname Szewczycki could also have been derived from the surnames Szewc, Szewczyk.
