Summary/Abstract: The text examines the footnote as a paratextual element in literary works, with particular attention to its use in the translation of fiction and the functions and necessity of its application. It analyzes the situations in which translators resort to additional explanations—such as culturally specific realia, non-equivalent lexical items, and intertextual references in the source text. The study discusses translation decisions related to the frequency of footnote use, their length, and the form in which information is presented, as well as the impact of these choices on the reader’s perception of the literary work. The footnote is examined not only as a technical element integrated into the translated text, but also as a marker of the translator’s stance. The empirical material is based on Georgi Gospodinov’s novel Time Shelter and its translations into several Slavic languages (Czech, Slovak, Polish, Croatian, Slovenian, Bosnian, and Serbian), allowing for a comparison of different empruntological strategies and approaches within closely related cultural and linguistic contexts
