Summary/Abstract: It is known that no part of speech in synchronic linguistics has fully preserved its original form. From a diachronic perspective, however, it is evident that in the course of historical development their lexical and grammatical meanings have undergone changes and have come to differ from their original meanings. Thus, some words emerged as a result of the fusion or integration of roots and affixes, and in a number of cases affixal morphemes were assimilated into the root and became an inseparable part of it. The results of etymological analysis conducted within the framework of the comparative-historical method show that most such linguistic units are genetically common in origin. This phenomenon indicates that during the period of incomplete differentiation of words in semantic and grammatical terms, root morphemes were used in parallel both in nominal and verbal meanings. In the process of language development, such linguistic units, formed on a syncretic basis, become fixed within particular grammatical categories as a result of functional differentiation and are distinguished as independent parts of speech. As a consequence, their semantic structure becomes more precise and their sphere of use more systematized. Relying on these scientific premises, homogeneous phenomena of the modern literary language can be regarded as linguistic units that are at an intermediate stage of historical development and have not yet fully stabilized semantically. However, such an interpretation requires rigorous scientific justification.
