Summary/Abstract: Although often referred to as Lied, the Romanian art song underwent a distinct and fascinating evolution, from vocal miniatures shaped by the many foreign influences that transformed Romanian culture and art to refined examples of vocal chamber music that continue to be composed today. Influenced by the German Lied, the French mélodie, and the rich traditions of Romanian folklore, the Romanian art song gradually developed into a distinctive genre known as cântec, a term that further emphasizes its unique profile within Romanian musical composition. This research traces the evolution and transformation of the Romanian cântec from the late nineteenth century through its crystallization in the works of Mihail Jora.
