Summary/Abstract: Cowbells have an important place in Bulgarian fiction as symbolic and functional elements, reflecting the specific cultural identity of the Bulgarian village and tradition. They are bearers of complex symbolic meanings which pass through different layers of a literary creation. They also occupy a special place in ethnopsychology, as their imagery goes beyond everyday life and becomes a deep symbolic code in fiction. This study presents their role and symbolic meaning in literary works of Ivan Vazov, Yordan Yovkov, Elin Pelin, Nikola Vaptsarov, Nikolay Haytov, Yordan Radichkov, Anton Donchev, and Georgi Gospodinov. It is shown howfiction preserves and transmits complex relations between man, nature, and society, as well as the transformation of traditional symbols in the modern artistic context.
