Summary/Abstract: The re-publication of the volume Statutul femeii în România comunistă. Politici publice și viață privată (The Status of Women in Communist Romania: Public Policies and Private Life), coordinated by Alina-Mery Hurubean, at Polis Books Publishing House (Iași, 2026), brings back into focus a central theme for understanding Romanian communism: the relationship between ideologically proclaimed equality and women's actual autonomy in social, professional, and family life. At first glance, the book appears to be a contribution to gender studies, but it is also a work relevant to political science, sociology, public policy analysis, and the history of authoritarian regimes. The volume appears in a context in which the memory of communism remains disputed. In the Romanian public sphere, divergent interpretations coexist, ranging from the condemnation of communism as a repressive regime to forms of social nostalgia fueled by the memory of job security, state-allocated housing, or certain social guarantees.
