Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the traditional and contemporary ceramics from the Troyan area. The focus is on the vitality of the traditional skills of making, as well as the processes of intergenerational transmission. Special attention is paid to the techniques established in the region for making the Troyan pattern, and innovative trends characteristic of modern times will also be traced. These issues will be addressed on the basis of initial empirical material collected from a field study in which qualitative research methods such as interview and observation were used. The results provided information on the traditional production of pottery and the making of the specific pattern in the town of Troyan and the region, on innovative moments and also on the contemporary interpretation of young craftsmen in their efforts to preserve the craft. The research interprets the material from interviews with two families of craftsmen. What emerges clearly is both the continuity and the interweaving of tradition with contemporary authorship. Problems related to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage and specifically to the technology of making Trojan pottery and its specific pattern become visible.
