Feedback in a Verbal Conflict Situation

Summary/Abstract: The main idea of the study is to highlight the role of feedback in conditions of verbal conflict as an indicator of the very presence of confrontation between the participants. The reasoning in the course of the presentation will be based on the key theses and methods of conversation analysis. Feedback will be presented as an essential element of the adjacency pairs, which simultaneously contributes to maintaining the sequence organisation of talk and provides information about the nature of the developing cooperation between the parties. The empirical material for the observations includes scenes of open confrontation, marked at speech level in the turn exchange between a guest and a host of a commentary studio for a reality show on Bulgarian television. The aim is to identify different types of feedback in conflictual verbal interactions and to mark their linguistic realisation. It is expected that negative evaluation will dominate in the responses and that disagreement, criticism, rejection, etc. will seep through the attacks on the position or the personality of the interlocutor.
