Summary/Abstract: While in traditional psychology ideology was viewed as a system of values reflected in political opinions, recent research in political psychology shows that ideology today functions more as a symbolic label attached to asocial category. Taking into account both the perspective offered by political science and that of sociology itself, we aim to develop an approach specific to political psychology, highlighting mechanisms that can help us answer the question of to what extent ideologies remain useful today, what their contribution is to the construction of social and cultural identity, and what psychological factors drive this process. It seems that the role of ideology today has shifted from the pragmatic realm of social organization and public policy making to the inner world of modern individuals, to their psychology, where it“soothes” identity-related anxieties, shields them from feelings of helplessness, boosts their self-esteem, and offers them a sense of belonging.
