Summary/Abstract: The diminishing importance of the left/right cleavage and the decline of traditional ideological families in the functioning of contemporary democratic systems have been attributed to factors such as the fall of Soviet-style communism, in contrast to the so-called „end of history” (understood as the globalization of the demo-liberal paradigm). The analysis of political life in Western states, with consolidated democracies, but also in young Central and Eastern European democracies, highlights the fact that anti-system tendencies,as well as the advance of populist, nationalist and extremist movements, can be explained, somewhat paradoxically, by the attenuation of the combativeness of traditional opponents of the ideological scene, tempted by participation in government within the framework of „grand coalitions”. Created with the aim of ensuring political stability and economic progress, as well as consolidating democracy and curbing the advance of undemocratic formations, grand coalitions have generated the perverse effect of the decline of traditional ideological families, as well as of diluting the substance of the left/right cleavage.
